Proposals in for market at Mayfield

The Mayfield Development Partnership, bringing forward the £850m regeneration of the 24-acre Mayfield station site in Manchester, has submitted an application for interim uses, including a market, events space, and office.

U+I was confirmed as the developer for the project last October, chosen by the Mayfield Partnership, made up of London & Continental Railways, Manchester City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester.

Mayfield Temporary Building Sketch

The temporary building, made of shipping containers and scaffolding, is planned for Baring Street

Studio Egret West is lead urban designer, architect and landscape architect.

While a masterplan for the overall scheme is being drawn up, the team has applied for permission to build a four-storey temporary building on an empty site off Baring Street, for events, exhibition and offices, alongside a community-use garden.

The plot is 17,000 sq ft, and is set to house a sheltered market space with 100 covers, stepped seating, and raised offices, for use by U+I.

Repurposed shipping containers would be used to provide the ground floor market stalls, with additional structure formed from scaffolding.

The site, once home to the Mayfield railway station, has been derelict for over a decade.

U+I plans to save the station building and retain other heritage assets in the area.

The Mayfield site is expected to provide 1,300 homes, 800,000 sq ft of office space, a 350-bedroom hotel, retail and leisure facilities and a new city park in total creating over 7,500 office, retail, leisure and construction jobs.
