Years after the completion of the first two blocks at the eye-catching scheme next to Castlefield’s listed viaducts, architect Weedon Partnership has designed proposals for blocks three and four at Potato Wharf on behalf of Lendlease Residential.
The plans, now submitted with Manchester City Council, comprise 191 apartments across two eight-storey blocks. Unlike the scheme previously approved in November 2015, which was intended for open market sale, the new scheme will be build-to-rent.
The blocks, which will “closely follow the visual precedent” set by the existing buildings, will be joined by a two-storey link building that will include a gymnasium, lounge and multi-functional room. It is proposed that Block Three will straddle Potato Wharf.
The proposals suggest that the current in-filled railway viaduct be kept that way for cycle storage, with residents’ parking being under three viaduct arches to the south of the site, within view of the buildings but away from the main pedestrian thoroughfares. Part of the site currently houses a disused cement works.
The professional team includes landscape architect Landscape Projects, planning consultant Deloitte, structural consultant Shepherd Gilmour, and WSP and AECOM on ecology. Turley Heritage and Stephen Levrant Heritage Architecture are advising on heritage, while Hulley & Kirkwood are working on M&E and sustainability.
