In a change to our regular feature, publisher Paul Unger shares some venues which mean a lot to Place North West and we felt could do with some virtual footfall as their doors close or go quiet at this time.
LUNYA… Founder Peter Kinsella and his team (pictured) supplied the first outside catering for our conferences when the market began to take off in 2012, it was incredibly handy to have a quality and flexible supplier when we were using pop-up venues in empty offices. And I recall a great debate over a private breakfast for around 30 invited guests exploring the future of Liverpool hosted by Grosvenor. Last December, Lunya Manchester treated us to fabulous wine and extraordinary crisp selection (fried egg and chorizo, anyone?) at our PlaceTech drinks for local proptech enthusiasts in our new office on Parsonage. FAZENDA… A long-running collaboration with Fazenda allows us to bring senior business people together in a fine dining setting with flair and a good story from founder Tomas Maunier and his passionate and knowledgeable team, introducing guests to Brazilian rodizio food at the group’s restaurants in Chester, Manchester, and Liverpool. The popular summer socials Place runs have also been held at Fazendas for several years. Maunier believes “there are people out there that need even more support than us” and urged patrons to pledge support at the Hospitality Action fund that has been established to support affected workers.
ALBERT SQUARE CHOP HOUSE… The charming upstairs function room at the most recent of the three Victorian Chop Houses – alongside Sam’s and Mr Thomas’s – was for several years the venue for some great sector briefings (until we outgrew it and went to larger venues). The bar is a popular haunt after work on a Friday for property and construction folk. Indeed, a few among us have been known to stop for a pint of cider mid walk to the tram stop. Booths in the excellent restaurant downstairs are great for a working lunch, and incidentally your publisher has made some momentous job offers there (accepted, thankfully) in the course of building this publication. Lawrence Hallows and his team on the meetings and events side are solid gold. We’ve held staff lunches in the boardroom and enjoyed many a client networking do, the last one Hydrock’s in February with plants (pictured) , mocktails and massages on tap. Nothing if not a versatile place and the Chop Houses are adapting now. Lawrence said vouchers are available by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and “we are setting up a delivery service with Just Eat and Deliveroo that should be live in 10-14 days.”
BANYAN… | Our end-of-year VIP drinks for clients and speakers is always a special night, where senior property folk get to meet and swap news over a pint and glass of wine. Banyan Spinningfields, host of our last such gathering, is staying open through the outbreak and needs all the support it can get, along with other bars and restaurants if you are still out and about.
SCIENCE & INDUSTRY MUSEUM… The conference suite at this much-loved Manchester attraction has become our regular venue for Place’s large conferences and SIM’s is a fantastic team to work with. Sadly all of the national group of science museums closed this week but the online shop with great toys and other gifts appears to still be up and running. Online shop
PRINCIPAL HOTEL MANCHESTER… now known as Kimpton Clocktower is the spiritual home of our raucous annual get-together Place Party, and it’s more than a hotel to us. The style and class with which general manager Peter Kienast and sales director Sharon Cameron handle clients is an old-school lesson in how to do it, whatever challenges arise in running gigs for 700 demanding property people. The hotel trade will be hit as hard as bars and restaurants and we look forward to returning in full voice for another knees-up in October. The hotel remains open “but will offer reduced restaurant, leisure and business facilities, in line with government guidance.”
