Plans in for Shudehill aparthotel
Designs by 5plus Architects on behalf of Salboy and Factory Estates for a 129-bedroom aparthotel in Manchester’s Northern Quarter have been submitted to the council.
The building, staggered at between four and 14 storeys, is earmarked for a corner plot opposite Shudehill Interchange, occupied by a mix of single-storey retail units, dilapidated former warehouses, and a cleared piece of land.
Amsterdam brand Zoku has been lined up to operate the aparthotel on Back Turner Street.
All six of the buildings on the plot are due to be demolished to make way for the scheme.
In a reported submitted with the planning application, 5plus said: “The overall vision for the development for a hotel at Back Turner Street is to provide a high quality statement building that will offer a new, exciting and unique user experience. The building should provide a gateway marker on this prominent corner at Shudehill whilst being sympathetic to the scale and architectural character of the area, particularly where the building blends into the Northern Quarter on High Street.”
Awful design. Far too tall. This is supposed to be a conservation area, so why don’t they ‘conserve’ the warehouse building already on site

Unimpressed with the total disregard for the unique and USP of the northern quarter. A new gateway building on the corner plot currently single storey infill which links to a reuse of the warehouse would be welcomed. This isn’t regeneration when it destroys the very thing the area is popular for.

That warehouse is an eyesore.It has got Kew Gardens growing out of it.I am all for preserving Manchester’s great industrial architecture, but I think people are getting a bit over-sentimental for this site.This building is nothing special,but better than a rotting shell.

Just because it’s any eyesore now (and it really is the pits) doesn’t mean we ought to approve anything and particularly something that is so out of scale and character with its context, which this bland identikit overs ales block clearly is. Come on Manchester we can do better than this!
