Plans in for Salford food hall
Proposals have been lodged for a ten-stall food hall and shisha bar at a former car repair centre on Bury New Road.
Millson Group, a design practice that includes work on Mission Mars’ successful Albert’s Schloss among its portfolio, is working with the site owner and applicant the Al-Mehdi Group on the redevelopment of the disused former Lexus garage.
The site sits 2.3km north of Manchester city centre. As it stands, the site is accessed from Bury New Road and Appian Way, on the other side of which sits a Tim Hortons cafe. The development would see the vehicle access from Bury New Road cut off, but the pedestrian access retained.
The applicant intends to simply reclad the existing structure, with only minor amendments to its height, and landscape the Bury New Road frontage.
Millson’s design and access statement states that “development of this site into a multi-cuisine food hall and shisha bar will offer both employment opportunities to local residents and a location for start-up dining businesses in a similar vein to existing similar venues such as Hatch on Oxford Road and Mackie Mayor in the Northern Quarter”.
Food halls opened in the region since include those at Stockport and in Macclesfield’s former Picturedrome, which started operating in 2019.
In 2018, consent was secured for a two-storey multi-faith banqueting suite at the site, but work never started.
A planning statement from consultancy Nineteen47 describes the intended layout: the food stalls will be located around the edges, with around 200 covers centrally. The upper part of the site, accessible from the first floor of the food hall, will house the shisha bar, which will seat 72 internally, with a flexible 20 outside – the shisha bar will be partly open.
Croft Transport, Omnia Consulting and Earth Environmental are also on the professional team.
This location doesn’t exactly scream food hall does it?
They should really look at combining this retail area with the Manchester Fort and make something decent as currently they’re both terrible.

There was me thinking that people visit Mackie Mayor and Hatch because their offerings are delicious. Still, Cal always provides light entertainment.

Hopefully this will be a catalyst to do something about the utter shabbiness of that area. That entry into the city is the worst of any city in Western Europe.

This will be great for local people, offering job opportunities and a variety of food options nearby. I’m excited at the prospect of this going ahead and are fully onboard with this.
