Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub

Plans in for £16m Great Sankey Leisure Centre revamp

LiveWire and Warrington Council has announced the redevelopment of the Great Sankey Leisure Centre, to include a health centre, retail units, a pharmacy and meeting rooms.

The 65,000 sq ft facility, designed by Walker Simpson Architects, will include a 120 station fitness suite, upgraded swimming pools, playing pitches, sports hall, group exercise studios, outdoor functional training frame, library, café, retail outlets, trim trail and heritage trail. There will also be a health wing providing medical services to west Warrington residents, along with a pharmacy and business zone offering meeting spaces.

The building will also host cultural events working in partnership with LiveWire’s sister company Culture Warrington.

Later phases plan to incorporate a spa with treatment programmes and facilities to promote well-being.

The main planning application for the scheme has been submitted and will be considered on the 5 August 2015.

Subject to approval, construction on the first phase will start later this year, with opening scheduled in autumn 2016.

Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub will be an integrated facility of services from by LiveWire, Warrington Borough Council, Culture Warrington, NHS, Clinical Commissioning Group and Health Plus serving the 58,233 residents of West Warrington.

The development will also incorporate external improvements and features including increased parking provision and enhanced road access to elevate congestion. Further opportunities are also being considered to improve Barrow Old Moat Hall to add to the health and wellbeing offer.

A planning application for the refurbishment of the existing all-weather pitch and an upgrade to a 3G artificial grass pitch was approved by Warrington Council earlier this month.

LiveWire has worked closely with Liverpool County FA to prepare a funding application to the Football Foundation to support this, with the outcome due by the end of July 2015.
