Plans approved for Bury Magistrates Court

Developers Welcome Estates and Cassel & Fletcher have gained approval for 49 homes at the former Magistrates Court on Tenters Street, Bury.

The scheme will be delivered by both developers as part of a joint venture.

The former court building was closed in 2018 by the Ministry of Justice. It will be converted over three levels to provide 22 one-bedroom and 17 two-bedroom apartments, along with 10 three-bedroom homes to sit adjacent.

Cassel & Fletcher acquired the building in July 2018 from Homes England. The company will also be the lead contractor on the scheme and work is expected to start in March.

The company previously converted the Ribblesdale Medical Centre in Bury to apartments, and has delivered other schemes around Greater Manchester.

Gideon Levene, director at Cassel & Fletcher, said: “This is a great opportunity to bring the former magistrates court back to life and increase the housing provision for local people. We specialise in refurbishing derelict properties and creating desirable new homes in great locations and this building is in a superb central spot in the heart of Bury town centre.”

Debtal Architecture designed the scheme, while BMC was the structural engineer and EDP was the M&E consultant.
