Peel seals deal to share port development advice

A deal to share technical information with the operator of the world's fifth busiest container port will help Peel Ports Group to develop the new Liverpool2 terminal.

Peel has agreed to forge stronger links with the Busan Port Authority in the Republic of Korea.

BPA president Lim Ki-tack and Mark Whitworth, chief executive of Peel Ports Group, signed a memorandum of understanding outlining a commitment to enhanced trade and maritime services between the two parties. Peel Group chairman John Whittaker was also present at the signing.

Under the memorandum, the two groups will work together to strengthen the technical, economical and commercial activities of the maritime sector. These include infrastructure development, environmental improvements, commercial waterfront development, skills and education.

Peel Ports hopes that the long standing relationship between the two authorities will help inform its own plans for the first semi-automated cantilever rail mounted gantry container crane terminal in Europe at Liverpool2, as well as helping to drive forward the use of developing technologies at BPA.

Six delegates from the Busan Port Authority, as well as a representative from the embassy of the Republic of Korea, were invited to a tour of the Port of Liverpool, as well as a discussion on further co-operations between the two parties.

Representatives from Peel Ports visited BPA earlier this year to find out more about its client operations and to facilitate the initial conversation which has led to the creation of the memorandum of understanding. More visits between the two authorities are expected as the relationship progresses.

All good and well but surely the most important element of the L2 project should be to have draft depth of 16.5m to accomodate ultra large ships. Post panamax are old news and the investment is therefore not being optimised. Be ambitious Peel, go ultra!
