Peel plans wharf extension opposite Media City
Peel Media has applied to Trafford Council for permission to build a pedestrian promenade and public realm area in front of Imperial War Museum North.
The design by London-based FoRM Associates shows a stepped area built over the current canal embankment, providing a walkway and seating area leading down to the water's edge.
The Imperial War Museum North is itself, in a separate project, remodelling its exterior space through a RIBA competition won by Berlin-based Topotek 1.
Peel would extend the existing Trafford canal promenade to the new foot bridge currently being built as part of phase on of Media City UK to link the Salford and Trafford sides of The Quays.
The promenade is part of the Irwell City Park project which is being co-ordinated by Central Salford urban regeneration company, in partnership with the three local authorities, Salford, Manchester and Trafford, and the North West Development Agency.
Media City UK is due for completion in 2011. The first residents will start moving in from spring 2010.
Here’s an idea. Shouldn’t the Imperial War Museum have a section totally dedicated to war-time entertainment? A friend of mine – a comedian during the war – was staggered when the IWM’s hierarchy told him there was no such thing. As Vera Lynn shows (and the military know) entertainment was and is the best way of boosting morale.
