Salford City Council has approved the £1bn expansion of MediaCityUK, which will deliver a further eight new buildings across Salford Quays.
Peel Media was granted outline consent for the second phase of MediaCityUK in October 2006, and had 10 years to bring forward detailed applications for each building.
Phase one of MediaCityUK is complete, and provides office and studio space for the BBC, accommodation for the University of Salford and ITV, further offices in The Landing and the Tomorrow building, two hotels, a multi-storey car park, 378 apartments, shops, restaurants, café and bar premises, new public spaces, a Metrolink station and a pedestrian footbridge across the Manchester Ship Canal.
Overall, the second phase is deliver 540,000 sq ft of offices, 1,800 apartments, retail and leisure, public spaces and a pedestrian street.
The buildings set to be built at MediaCityUK over the next 10 years are:
- 97,000 sq ft office by Chapman Taylor
- 182 apartments and car park by Hodder & Partners
- 1,052-space multi-storey car park by Chapman Taylor
- 286 flats by Jeffrey Bell
- Market and event space by Jeffrey Bell
- 477 apartments and townhouses by Chapman Taylor
- 300,000 sq ft office by Sheppard Robson
- 450 apartments by 5plus
- 476 apartments in two blocks by AHR Architects
In March, Peel accelerated its application for the residential scheme by AHR, which was approved and the apartments in the first building launched to the market for sale. A start on site is expected by the end of the year.
The new spaces being created at MediaCityUK will be named The Arcade, Studio Square, Georgian Square, Market Square, London Square and Northern Edge
