The developer is seeking consent for two car parks totalling 710 spaces on land between Broadway and the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford.
Peel L&P’s application, recommended for approval by Salford City Council, proposes a surface level car park and a three-tier multistorey car park on a 4.2-acre site next to the developer’s 238-apartment Lightbox.
The scheme is being brought forward in an attempt to provide adequate parking provision to keep pace with the ongoing development in the area.
The multistorey car park, comprising 548 parking spaces, would be built on the part of the site closest to Lightbox, designated as plot E1.
Plot E1 was most recently occupied by site cabins for Lightbox contractor Bouygues UK.
The surface level car park, providing an additional 162 spaces, would be created on an adjoining strip of disused land next to the Mode Wheel Locks.
Peel L&P has secured two planning permissions for a neighbouring site, plot D3. The original consent proposed 180 apartments and a 434-space car park. A subsequent application, approved in February, proposed upping the number of apartments to 280 and scrapping much of the parking provision.
The developer’s request for the 710 spaces across plot E1 and the Mode Wheel Locks site has been submitted to account for the parking provision removed from the D3 scheme.
AHR Architects is leading on design and heads a project team including landscape architect Gillespies, and planner NJL Consulting.
Salford City Council’s planning committee will consult on the plans on Thursday.
