Parks win Lottery funding

Peel Park in Salford and Winckley Square Gardens in Preston were among 16 public spaces around the country handed £34m in grants by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund.

Friends of Peel Park, with Salford Council, were awarded £1.6m towards a £2.5m project to restore the park to its 1890s glory including recreating original layout of paths and terraces.

A £1.2m project to restore Preston’s historic Winckley Square Gardens will go ahead next year after funding of around £950,000 was confirmed.

HLF also awarded £1.2m to Wrexham Cemetery and made a provisional offer of £860,000 to Thompson Park in Burnley.
