Northern Quarter office block approved

Developer Iftikhar Gillan's plans for a third development in Manchester's Northern Quarter have been approved, following the success of his Swan Square and Hilton Square schemes.

The 680 sq ft plot on the site of a public toilet at the corner of Tib Street and Foundry Street is to be the location for a three-storey single-unit building for commercial, office or retail use.

The redevelopment site is located at the edge of Smithfield conservation area.

The 1,750 sq ft unit is opposite Swan Square, a development of 14 small office units built by Gillan's company Workshop Properties in 2012.

Gillan's first development, Hilton Square, includes Victorian terraced shops and a new building which contains 19 units in total.

The architect for the Tib Street scheme is Total Architecture.

Within the planning documents, Total Architecture said: "The proposed redevelopment scheme will replace this dilapidated building with a simple but high quality and well-designed development which has regard to the special interest, character and appearance of Smithfield Conservation Area and the surrounding streetscape."
