NOMA public realm name shortlist released

The shortlist of names for the new public square at NOMA has been announced, after a competition inviting residents of Manchester to submit suggestions received almost 700 entries.

The square will sit between the CIS Tower, New Century House and Hanover near Victoria Station. During the course of the £800m NOMA development the area is expected to attract a mix of cafés, restaurants, bars and shops.

The seven shortlisted names for the square are:

  • Cotton
  • Miller’s
  • Pioneer
  • Turing
  • Mayes
  • Sadler’s
  • Makers

An expert panel will now consider the shortlist, with the winner announced by the end of this month.

The city square is being delivered by the Co-operative and Hermes Real Estate alongside Manchester City Council as part of the 20-acre £800m NOMA development, and is supported by the European Regional Development Fund. The square has been designed by landscape architects Planit-IE, and contractors Casey are on site undertaking construction works.

The scheme will open in October 2015.

David Pringle, director of NOMA, and a member of the selection panel, said: “NOMA is an area with a rich and vibrant heritage, and we wanted the people who live, work and enjoy themselves here to become a part of its future so we have been delighted with the response.

“There have been many examples of crowd sourcing and crowd funding but this is crowd naming. Each suggestion has its merits and so it will be very difficult to choose the winner which will create a piece of Manchester history.”

Only Pioneer stands out to me. The rest are either predicable – Cotton or Turing or beyond obscure / bland

Has to be Pioneer – obvious Coop link and its something inspirational compared to all the others

I thought someone had suggested Oasis? Hoped that would be shortlisted at least.

There were so many brilliant suggestions on their twitter feed I’m quite disappointed at the shortlist. None of the names really stand out enough to me. I doubt Cotton Square will rival Spinningfields.

“I doubt Cotton Square will rival Spinningfields.”…Oh, I don’t know…both are jaw droppingly anodyne, and bear little or no relation to their landscape character.
