New Wirral college campus planned
Peel Investments is seeking a contractor to build a £5m teaching block for Wirral Metropolitan College.
The development will be on Tower Road South in Birkenhead. The scheme is being developed in partnership with the Peel Group as part of its £4.6bn Wirral Waters project.
The new campus is planned to open by September 2015 and will be a dedicated built environment, skills and enterprise centre.
The first phase of the project will comprise the design and construction of a two-storey college building. The scheme includes specialist workshops for brickwork and plaster; gas, plumbing and electrical; joinery; and painting and decorating, as well as the construction of ancillary accommodation.
Sue Higginson, principal of Wirral Met College, said: "We have developed this initiative with the Peel Group, a major private sector developer with a proven track record of delivery, including major projects such as MediaCityUK and the Trafford Centre."
John Whittaker, chairman of The Peel Group, said: "Wirral Waters is not only an important project for Peel, it is an important scheme for the City Region, for Peel's Ocean Gateway and for future generations to come. Peel recognises the importance of infrastructure. It's this investment into our ports, our transport systems and energy provision – that really underpins 'growth' projects such as Wirral Waters – and I put skills and training into the same category."
The deadline for receipt of tenders is 25 April 2014.
