Cumbria County Council has granted planning consent for a multi-million pound redevelopment of the Lismore Place site in Carlisle.

The former St Aidan's School currently occupying the site will be demolished to make way for the Richard Rose Central Academy.

Shaun Gorman, head of environment and directorate of economy at Cumbria County Council, presented the proposals to members of the council's development control panel.

They met in Kendal this week and plans for a new building to replace the Edwardian school was approved.

The new building will consist of three floors and act as an academy for 1,500 pupils.

Work will begin on the site with a target opening date being January 2011.
