Network Rail to fit new lifts at Oxford Road

Civil engineering contractor Murphy Group has started work on a £1.8m job to install lifts at Manchester Oxford Road station as part of Network Rail's Access for All programme.

Currently, disabled passengers and those with pushchairs and heavy luggage must divert via Manchester Piccadilly or negotiate the stairs between three of the five platforms at the station to reach the entrance.

Murphy will refurbish existing lift shafts, install two new lifts, reinstate the subway entrance at the front of the station and create an emergency escape staircase.

The work started this week and is due to take 28 weeks to complete.
