MOSI secures £1.8m Wellcome grant

The Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester will start its search for a design team in May to bring forward plans for a temporary exhibition gallery, after it was awarded a £1.8m grant from the Wellcome Trust.

The funding from Wellcome's capital awards scheme follows the Government's commitment in December to provide £3.8m towards the project, in addition to £800,000 from the Treasury.

The new gallery is to be housed in the basement of the 1830 railway warehouse. The internal vaulted space will be opened up to create a double-height 5,000 sq ft room. The gallery will house temporary exhibitions and focus on biomedical displays.

The grants now cover 90% of the cost, enabling MOSI to start work on the project in the coming weeks.

The gallery is due to open in 2018.
