Morgan Ashurst finishes Toxteth mosque revamp

The Liverpool base of construction company Morgan Ashurst has handed over the keys to the newly-refurbished Al-Rahma Mosque, part of the Islamic Cultural Centre in Mulgrave Street, Toxteth.

The firm, based in Highfield Street, added two storeys and carried out significant refurbishments inside the mosque. The project has been put forward for a Civic Trust Award, which recognises buildings that make a difference to communities and the built environment.

Working with Aigburth-based Martin Fletcher Architects and Emile Sanan engineers, Morgan Ashurst removed the mosque's original roof and some of its existing blockwork and created a steel-framed extension. The company also filled two turrets, originally built with concrete manhole rings, with fresh concrete before cladding them in brick. Internal improvements carried out included the creation of new concrete floors and a steel staircase.

All of the funding for the project was raised by members of the mosque.
