MoJ looking at North West sites to build new prisons

The Ministry of Justice has announced it is considering sites in the North West for its plans to build three prisons to hold 1,500 cells.

Seven firms have been shortlisted by the Ministry of Justice for a framework to design, build and operate the five prisons on Private Finance Initiative contracts. These include:

  • G4S
  • GEO Group (with Balfour Beatty)
  • Kalyx
  • Mitie (with Laing O'Rourke)
  • Reliance (with Bouygues)
  • Serco
  • Wates Construction (with MTC)

It has already been confirmed two new prisons, both containing 1,500 cells, are being built at Beam Park West in Dagenham, Kent and at Runwell in Essex.

The Ministry of Justice is also looking at sites in London, North Wales, and West Yorkshire.
