MMU seeks contractor for student flats at Birley Fields

Manchester Metropolitan University is seeking a contractor for student accommodation at its planned Birley Fields campus.

In June the university won planning permission for the £110m Hulme campus which will cater for nursing and teaching students in Hulme.

It includes a 250,000 sq ft five-storey academic building which will have lecture theatres, study areas and sports and arts facilities.

Now it is inviting tenders for a design and build contract for five blocks with bedrooms for up to 1,200 students.

"The works may be phased with the first phase providing accommodation for an estimated 700 students," said a notice in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The university expects to invite at least five companies to tender for the 30-month job.

The deadline for expressions of interest is December 19.
