MMU Cornerhouse plans in

Cornerhouse Oxford RoadPlans have been submitted to Manchester City Council for the change of use of the former Cornerhouse site in Oxford Street into a studio and rehearsal space for Manchester Metropolitan University's School of Theatre.

The council and MMU announced last month that they had agreed terms for the University to take a lease of 70 Oxford Street from the end of April 2015, following the relocation of the Greater Manchester Arts Centre to HOME at First Street. HOME is Manchester's new centre for contemporary art, theatre, film and books.

According to the application from agent Cassidy + Ashton, the Cornerhouse building would be converted to house two acting studios, a movement studio, a theatre and rehearsal space and a voice studio. Around 450 students and 90 staff would be expected to use the facility.

Work on the exterior of the building would include installing replacement doors and windows.

MMU's lease on the Cornerhouse is understood to be for a number of years, although MMU is yet to confirm exactly how long.
