Morgan Sindall has been chosen to deliver the latest scheme at the Knowledge Quarter in Liverpool, a six-storey diagnostics centre opposite the Royal College of Physicians’ headquarters.

The building, to be operated by Proton Partners subsidiary Rutherford Diagnostics, secured planning consent last week and has been designed by Ryder Architecture.

The 46,000 sq ft facility sits opposite The Spine, the Royal College of Physicians’ Northern headquarters; this is also being built by Morgan Sindall, and work started on site this week.

Morgan Sindall has been appointed by the City Council, which is acting as developer, and the building is then being leased back to Proton Partners once it completes. The contractor is aiming to start the new facility this year.

It will be Proton Partners’ second building at the Knowledge Quarter, with contractor Interserve already on site at its Rutherford Cancer Centre, which will offer high energy proton beam therapy to cancer patients.

Announcing the deal at MIPIM UK, Mike Moran, chief executive of Proton Partners International, said: “This centre aspires to be a leader in the prediction, prevention and earliest possible detection of disease, as well as being equipped to conduct the most complex of diagnostic tests across a wide range of conditions.

“The centre will be in a position to furnish health care providers with the most advanced diagnostic data.”

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson added: “I’m delighted this diagnostics centre is to be based in Paddington Village, it’s a huge boost for our plans to create a world leading medical research and innovation hub in the heart of the city’s Knowledge Quarter.

“Paddington Village is gaining real momentum now with renowned tenants like Proton Partners International, the RCP and Kaplan investing in the city and creating highly skilled jobs – and the great news is that there is much more to come.”
