Merseytravel has awarded BFG International with a £7m contract to dispose of and supply cladding panels for the Queensway Birkenhead Tunnel.

The Bahrain-based company has been appointed to clear and dispose of approximately 240,000 sq ft of redundant corrugated steel cladding and 7,800 linear metres of walkway handrail.

The contract also involves BFG International supplying, designing and installing over 340,000 sq ft of fire resistant cladding panels.

Transport executive Merseytravel said all work will be carried out during the evening with the tunnel closing six consecutive nights at three week intervals.
