Menai bridge refurb to begin
Engineer Spencer Group is to start work this month on a 23-week repair project at the historic Menai Suspension Bridge.
Working on behalf of client UK Highways A55 Ltd, Spencer will remove, replace and resurfance almost all the footway panels on the approach spans for both sides of the grade one-listed structure.
Designed by Thomas Telford, the bridge between Anglesey and the Welsh mainland was opened in 1826 and is the second oldest operational vehicular suspension bridge in the world.
Luke Fisher, sector lead for bridges and structures at Spencer, said: “The Menai Suspension Bridge is another prestigious project to add to our portfolio. It builds on our acknowledged capability in the refurbishment of landmark and historic crossings.”
The Spencer team will use rope access methods, working over the side and underneath the bridge deck. Each footway will be dealt with in turn, being closed to the public for the duration of works, with passengers asked to use the opposite side.
