Melwood transformation fleshed out

Developer Torus has released two potential designs for the redevelopment of Liverpool FC’s famous former training ground in West Derby into almost 200 homes.

Both proposals, drawn up by architect Corstophine + Wright, feature an extra care scheme for over-55s, and the retention of the existing training facilities building off Deysbrook Road.

However, the training facilities building will only be retained if a “commercially viable end-user” can be found, according to Torus.

Design one features 100 extra care apartments in a complex located in the north-west corner of the 12-acre site off Melwood Drive, as well as 92 homes comprising a mix of semi-detached units, bungalows and townhouses.

Design two incorporates the retention of the existing five-a-side facility on the site. The extra-care facility would again feature 100 apartments but would be located at the south-west corner of the site under the second design option. A total of 95 houses are also included in design two, but the amount of proposed green space would be reduced due to the retention of the five-a-side facility.

A consultation on the designs is now open.

Housebuilder Torus bought Melwood from Liverpool FC in 2019 and the club relocated to the £50m Axa Training Centre in Kirkby last year, paving the way for the developer to progress the scheme.

Managing director of Torus Developments Chris Bowen, said: “Throughout the creation of each of the two proposed designs, we considered feedback received from the community in our first round of consultation and worked hard to incorporate design features that would positively impact concerns local people raised.

“We have worked closely with local experts and we want to hear directly from the community, so are encouraging people to get involved and be an active contributor to the next phase in Melwood’s legacy, which is one beyond football.”

The project team for the Melwood redevelopment features HL Structural Engineers, landscape architects Exterior Architecture, and Prime Transport Planning.

It would be amazing if the building was kept for the community to use. I am 64 with limited mobility and suffer with chronic pain.I live right behind the building and would use the pool daily if possible.
