Media City named project of year

The winners of the North West Regional Construction Awards 2011 were revealed at Chester Racecourse on Thursday night.

The achievements of the region's best and most innovative construction projects and organisations were celebrated with 17 awards presented to winners selected from over 100 nominations.

NW Construction AwardsThe awards were hosted by the Centre for Construction Innovation, the Constructing Excellence centre for the North West, and part of the School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford.

Notable winners included Manchester City Council, which picked up three awards, Media City UK, which won the Project of the Year and the Workington River Crossing project, which was awarded a special judges' award, as well as the Cumbria Local Economic Award.

To reflect the change in Government's thinking to localism, this year saw the five regional Construction Best Practice Club awards renamed to Local Economic Awards. To ensure that local people choose their own local winners, CCI asked the regional Best Practice Clubs to judge the applications from their region to decide which of them was their best project.

Roy Stewart, chief executive of CCI, said: "I would like to thank all those who came out to show their support. To have received such a large number of entries is testament to the resilience and forward thinking mentality of the North West's construction sector. The submissions raise the bar each year and I would like to praise both the winners and finalists in making the region a pioneer for sustainability in construction."

Sponsors of the event included Willmott Dixon Construction, Place North West, Hill Dickinson, BRE and the University of Salford. Granada TV's Lucy Meacock hosted of the evening.
