Street food, craft beer and events company Grub is set to take a multi-year lease on railway arches at U+I’s £850m mixed-use Mayfield development behind Piccadilly Station in Manchester.
Grub formerly operated a temporary, weekly street-food fair at Baring Street on the site, running every Friday and Saturday. The company is now seeking a permanent home and has taken up space at Arch 6 on Temperance Street, initially operating on Fridays and at the weekend.
Developer U+I has now submitted a planning application to make the move semi-permanent, and envisages Grub will operate food fairs, beer festivals, live music and events from the arches at least until the end of 2018, with the option of extending through to 2020, whilst the regeneration of the area is ongoing. It will be open seven days a week between midday and midnight.
U+I said giving Grub a permanent home at the site would give “an ideal opportunity to remove preconceptions of the area and to demonstrate the creative approach to the redevelopment of Mayfield”.
The professional team includes Deloitte as planner and Just Architects.
The wider mixed-use £850m Mayfield development will be delivered over the next 10 years, and is due to include 1,300 homes, 800,000 sq ft of office space, a 350-bedroom hotel, retail, leisure facilities, and a park.
The initial strategic framework for the 24-acre site was agreed by the council in 2014, and U+I was picked as development partner in September 2016.
