Work on the Marks & Spencer Church Street store in Liverpool city centre is underway and the retailer will remain in the premises during its refurbishment.

M&S has traded from the store, currently occupying 87,100 sq ft of the Compton House building, since the 1920s and will expand its size to 104,300 sq ft.

The retailer will occupy the entire frontage of the building for the first time taking three small shop units on the ground floor, and will extend into the former hotel on the building's first floor.

A new M&S Café and new furniture section with views across Church Street is being added and the work is expected to last until autumn this year.

During the refurbishment, it was believed M&S would move into the former John Lewis store nearby, but it has decided to remain trading from the site.
