Manchester academy school confirmed

An 85,000 sq ft free school is to be built in Rusholme, after Manchester City Council approved plans for Enterprise Academy Central, which would create 1,050 new school places for 11-16 year olds.

Manchester City Council was also the applicant behind the school, which would be built on an eight-acre site at Lytham Road, currently disused playing fields formerly used by the University of Manchester.

Designed by Ellis Williams Architects, the academy will be a three-storey building, in a horseshoe shape around a central courtyard.

Laing O’Rourke is the main contractor, and Turley the planner.

The development includes sports halls and sports pitches, which will also be open for community use at evenings and weekends.

Altius Trust has been selected as the provider of the Academy. Altius also operates a school in Wythenshawe.
