Management buyout at Identity Consult

Founder David Dent has moved to the role of chairman at Preston-based construction consultancy Identity with two senior staff acquiring a stake in the business to join the board.

Matthew Pendergast and Andrew Milnes have acquired part of the business and will sit alongside existing equity directors Mark Doherty and Pete Johnson on the company’s board. Doherty will now act as the company’s managing director.

The consultant, which also has an office in Sunderland, has expanded rapidly since 2006 and now employs 32 people with a record turnover of £2.6m expected in its current financial year.

Projects the company has helped to deliver include the PRP-designed Limelight, a £20m scheme built by Willmott Dixon Partnerships for Trafford Housing Trust; and the £26m Catalyst Building at Edge Hill University.

It also has two major projects on site at Lancaster University: the £47m Management School and the £41m Health Innovation Campus, where Bam is acting as main contractor.

Dent said: “This represents the end of a chapter but the start of an exciting one in the history of Identity Consult. I have handed over the business to an extremely talented board, led by Mark Doherty who I’ve worked with since the inception of our business.

“They have developed an exciting strategy for the future direction and growth of the business with our clients, partners and staff, as always, being at the forefront and I look forward to working with them to help realise those ambitions.”

Doherty added: “The MBO is the start of an exciting new era with a business plan aimed at facilitating growth, driving innovation and underpinned with excellence in delivery. The Board have worked hard developing and nurturing a team of consultants who genuinely want to make a difference to the communities in which they work.

“Our clients also tell us they really value that our directors will remain hands-on from the start to the finish of their projects. This helps us guide them through the changes and challenges they inevitably face on large-scale developments and we believe that being able to deliver this level of service is what has set us apart from the competition.”
