Lottery funding for RIBA show
The Royal Institute of British Architects has received £67,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the Alternative Liverpool project, an exhibition showcasing unbuilt Liverpool which will open in spring 2015 at the new RIBA Architecture Centre in Liverpool.
Alternative Liverpool will allow people to compare Liverpool's familiar landmarks with images of early designs shown in drawings from the RIBA collections. Many of these drawings have never been displayed before.
As part of Alternative Liverpool, the RIBA will work with social enterprise PLACED to deliver a number of workshops to provide participants with an understanding of how architectural heritage informs our future environment.
The RIBA has also recruited a number of volunteer guides for its Liverpool city tours programme who will deliver a number of tours focusing on Alternative Liverpool.
Stephen Hodder, president of the RIBA, said: "The RIBA Architecture Centre in Liverpool is a major project and with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund we are able to launch the centre with a fantastic exhibition that brings part of the seldom seen RIBA collections to a regional public audience."
This is why the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) needs to get its act together and make itself more known to the public. The CIOB has long been the poor cousin of the other built environment institutes, e.g. RIBA, RICS, ICE. The CIOB was formed in the same year as the RIBA (1834) and 34 years before the RICS so the history and pedigree is there. Maybe there are more opportunities for these other institutes to put themselves forward more; I don’t know. The CIOB needs to shake off the cobwebs and rise upto the challenge. Just because you are a leading authority on construction sustainability and BIM doesn’t mean you excite the public. Come on, get a grip!
