Liverpool tips Lidl for consent in face of Morrisons concerns

Approval could be given next week for a 21,500 sq ft supermarket on the site of the former Coronation pub in Belle Vale.

Lidl is seeking permission to build a store on the two-acre site off Childwall Valley Road.

Liverpool City Council has received 114 letters expressing support for the plans and 62 opposing the application.

Morrisons, which has a store nearby, has also had its say on Lidl’s proposals.

A letter of objection sent by planning consultant Peacock Smith on behalf of Morrisons said the retail impact statement submitted with Lidl’s application is “out of date and inaccurate”.

The retail statement, prepared by consultancy Plan A, said Morrisons is overtrading at present and that a new Lidl store nearby would “not put [Morrisons] under undue trading pressures”.

However, Morrisons disputes the report’s findings, claiming its turnover is half that outlined.

Peacock Smith said: “It is considered that on a cumulative basis, the application would have a significant adverse impact on Belle Vale district centre as a whole.”

Liverpool City Council planning officers concluded that “there would be no significantly adverse impact upon the allocated centres as a result of the proposal”.

The scheme is recommended for approval when Liverpool’s planning committee meets next week.

The Lidl will be fairly small and though it will have some effect on Morrisons it is such a big store it should be able to handle some reduced custom.

If it helps increase competitive prices, all for the good of the people who are struggling to make ends meet.

We need them to give planning permission for the store next to Picton clock. Knock down the derelict building and create jobs and lower prices for consumers
