Liverpool shows bio-science strengths to Chinese

A delegation of scientists from China is visiting Liverpool on Monday to assess the city as a potential investment location.

Directors from the Shanghai Clinical Research Centre will tour Liverpool's main bio-science sites, including MerseyBio and the Clinical Research Facility at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

The delegates include Dr Rongxing Gan, president and chief executive of the Shanghai centre, Dr Jiong Zhang, vice president and Dr Yang Zhang, vice director of the Biobank Department. The Shanghai Clinical Research Centre is supported by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and the Municipality of Shanghai.

Mike Taylor, deputy chief executive of Liverpool Vision, said: "This visit is the start of high-level links between Liverpool and Chinese clinical centres that have come about through the city's presence at the World Expo in Shanghai.

"It's a great opportunity to showcase to China the clinical expertise and exciting clinical developments in Liverpool and it is hoped that this visit will lead to a strong international relationship which could benefit both sides."

Liverpool is a leading location for vaccine development and bio-manufacturing. There are more than 60 bio companies on Merseyside, including Eden Biodesign, Novartis, Eli Lilly, ML Laboratories and SHS International.
