Liverpool art academy architect dies

Rick Mather, the celebrated architect whose practice designed the 2010 RIBA award winning Art & Design Academy in Liverpool, has died at the age of 75.

The academy houses Liverpool John Moores University's School of Art & Design and is located on the Mount Pleasant Campus.

The building was constructed between 2005 and 2008 at a cost of £27m and was designed by Rick Mather Architects, London.

Born in Portland, Oregan, the American architect came to London in 1963 and founded his own practice in Camden.

Well known for university work, RMA also worked on the masterplans for the University of East Anglia and Keble College, Oxford.

Mather served on the councils of both the RIBA and the Architectural Association, and was a trustee of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
