Liverpool appoints new city solicitor

Daniel Fenwick will join the council at the end of the year, replacing Jeanette McLoughlin as city solicitor and monitoring officer.

McLoughlin retired from the position in May.

Fenwick has been the director of legal and governance at the London Boroughs of Newham and Havering for the past six years. Other previous jobs including acting as director of governance for the London Borough of Waltham Forest, principal lawyer for the London Borough of Camden and senior employment lawyer for the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Fenwick is no stranger to the North West, having studied at the University of Manchester as an undergraduate and studied for his CPE in law at Manchester Metropolitan University

As monitoring officer, Fenwick will oversee complaints regarding council members and officers violating code of conduct agreements.

“The job of city solicitor and monitoring officer is absolutely fundamental to ensuring Liverpool City Council operates with transparency, and in the best interests of the residents, businesses and stakeholders we represent,” said Liverpool City Council chief executive Tony Reeves.

“I am very much looking forward to working with Daniel, and drawing on his significant public sector experience to deliver a first-class service for the city of Liverpool,” Reeves continued.

Fenwick said he was both “excited and privileged” to join the council.

“I know Liverpool is a city that has not stood still in recent years,” Fenwick said.  “Despite the challenges it faced, it is very much looking to the future with a strong plan in place to become a fairer city with more equal opportunities for its residents.

“I look forward to working with the mayor, councillors and all officers in the months and years ahead,” he continued.
