Lidl to open at Hattersley Retail Park

Lidl has been announced as one of the anchor tenants at Hattersley Retail Park after exchanging contracts on a 19,300 sq ft store.

The retail park, developed by Maple Grove in partnership with Tameside Council and Onward Homes, is located off Stockport Road.

The development secured planning approval in February 2015, and Maple Grove, part of Eric Wright Group, was appointed preferred development partner the following year. A predominantly brownfield site, the retail park includes 14 units totalling 75,000 sq ft, including the Lidl store and a drive-through restaurant.

Lidl’s store in Hattersley forms part of its plans to open 50 sites annually over the coming years, and other new stores in the North West include a 24,000 sq ft site next to a Tesco superstore in Baguley, south Manchester.

Robin Monk, director of place at Tameside Council, said: “Attracting a retailer of Lidl’s quality to the final phase of the new district centre is a direct result of our commitment, with Onward Homes and other partners, to secure investment for the comprehensive regeneration of Hattersley.”

“This will bring new retail choice and employment opportunities to the local area and will complement the major investment in new housing, transport infrastructure, community facilities and public realm improvements.”

Brady Chartered Surveyors and Reid Rose Gregory are the retail agents for the development.

Can’t believe a housing association and a council are developing a bog standard, car dependent, big-box retail park. They really should have an eye on a pedestrian-friendly, walkable and mixed use model of development.

Good news for the area, seems to be quite a buzz about Tameside.

The retail park is across the road from c1,600+ houses to the west, with hundreds more to the east. I’m not sure how much more pedestrian friendly they could get.
