Lidl lines up Workington

Discount supermarket group Lidl GB will next week hold a public consultation day to outline plans for a store on New Bridge Road, Workington.

The event will take place at Workington Leisure Centre, Griffin Street on Tuesday 25 June between 2pm and 7pm, with Lidl’s property team on hand to describe the supermarket’s plans for a new store and answer questions.

The supermarket revealed in April that it wants to open a brand new store in the Cumbrian town as part of its ongoing expansion. This year alone in the North West it has secured approvals in Ormskirk, Crewe and Blackburn; started work in Winton, Salford for a 2020 opening; and signed on to anchor Oldham’s Princes Gate.

Regional head of property David Murphy said: “We are extremely excited about the prospect of opening a Lidl in Workington and serving our fresh, quality and incredibly good value produce which shoppers across the country have come to love.

“We look forward to welcoming anyone along to the public consultation day and showcasing our plans whilst answering any questions.”

Lidl has been on an expansion spree for several years in the UK, one of the German group’s strongest growing territories. The planned store in Workington will add to Lidl’s existing store portfolio of 760, and will form part of the company’s growth plans which will see it open up to 50 new stores a year.

The company hopes to submit a planning application for Workington within the next month.
