Leisure Lakes reveals revamp plans

Leisure Lakes has announced a proposal to upgrade its existing site near Tarleton with 137 holiday homes, a golf driving range and a clubhouse.

Leisure Lakes is an established tourist destination in Mere Brow, West Lancashire. The site is a reclaimed gravel workings that now caters for a broad range of outdoor sport and leisure activities.

The 300-acre site already has facilities for camping and caravans but Leisure Lakes is planning to expand the offering with 137 holiday homes, of which 49 already have planning permission, alongside 225 caravan pitches and a 2,400 sq ft golf clubhouse.

The plans also include the relocation of the golf driving range and stopping motorised sports at the site.

An 18-hole golf course, which was granted planning permission in July 2014 but is awaiting additional environmental permissions, will operate alongside the resort’s existing nine-hole course, home to Southport Golf Academy.

A masterplan has been drawn up by Manchester-based Urban Green, with local firm Peter Dickinson Architects designing the holiday homes and golf clubhouse. The masterplan includes 33 floating lodges set on the lake.

Andrew Watt, partner at Maze, said: “Leisure Lakes is locally well known. The masterplan shows how it can be updated to create a modern leisure resort, which will broaden its appeal and extend its attractiveness beyond the borough. It promises to be a real boon for the local tourism economy.

“Guided by landscape, tree and ecology specialists at Urban Green, the plans will also see Leisure Lakes investing substantial time and money in to the creation of 59 acres of new woodland and establishing long term programmes for the management of existing woodland areas to benefit habitats and create perfect conditions for wildlife to thrive.”

A three-week public consultation will now take place, ending on 21 April 2017, with letters being sent to neighbours of the site and the intention to submit a planning application later this year
