Leigh rugby ground housing kicks off

Engie has started work on a 103-home development at Hilton Park in Leigh for private rent specialist Sigma Capital.

Remedial works are now under way on the £11.3m development, which will see the construction of more than 100 one, two, three, and four-bed homes for private rent, delivered under Sigma’s Simple Life brand.

Construction will last for 120 weeks with the scheme due to fully hand over in May 2021. The site was formerly home to Leigh’s rugby league team, which relocated to Leigh Sports Village in 2009.

It marks the first time that Engie has worked with Sigma in the North West, having previously delivered homes for the developer in Yorkshire. Sigma has become prolific in the region, with a portfolio including sites in Ellesmere Port and Prescot.

Leader of Wigan Council, Cllr David Molyneux said: “Working closely with the private sector to deliver housing not only helps us to meet housing demand but also opens up more opportunities for existing residents and those thinking of moving to our borough.

“Good quality new housing along with improved transport links and employment opportunities provides the right mix to keep our local economy growing, which is another key priority for us. We look forward to the prospects this development will bring to the local community.”
