Langtree presses on with St Helens RLFC stadium

Newton le Willows-based developer, Langtree Group, is preparing to start construction of the new stadium for St Helens Rugby League FC.

Planning permission was granted in May 2008 for a 17,800-capacity stadium, alongside a 140,000 sq ft Tesco store and associated infrastructure works. The new ground will occupy the derelict 46-acre former United Glass site and is due to be finished in time for the 2011 season.

Langtree is now inviting contractors to bid for £44m of works, split into £24m for the stadium, £18m for the Tesco and £2m on infrastructure.

The contract is made up of site clearance, demolition, asbestos removal, remediation works, landscaping to public realm areas, construction of the stadium, supermarket and off-site infrastructure works.

There is planning consent for a Taylor Wimpey housing element on the land to be vacated by Saints.

Quantity surveyor Arcadis AYH in Leeds is advising Langtree and St Helens Rugby League FC.

A shortlist of five contractors will be drawn up by the end of the summer with a winner announced in the autumn.
