Langtree closes in on St Helens stadium contractor

Newton-le-Willows based developer Langtree said it has shortlisted six construction firms to build the 17,980-capacity stadium for St Helens Rugby League FC.

The unnamed contractors are vying for a £50m job, divided between the construction of the stadium, an adjacent Tesco superstore and infrastructure works across the entire former United Glass site in Peasley Cross, St Helens.

Martin Mellor, Langtree director, said: "We were very pleased with the calibre of companies which enquired about building the new stadium. Our shortlist includes some of the biggest names in construction throughout the country and we are sure this will ultimately lead to the stadium being built to the highest possible quality."

Shortlisted companies have until November 27 to submit fully-costed proposals to Langtree. These proposals will then be scrutinised by Langtree and its partners – St Helens RLFC and St Helens Council – prior to a decision to award the tender being announced.

It is expected that the final decision will be made public early in the New Year with construction work on the stadium beginning in the first quarter of 2010. The stadium is expected to be operational during the 2011 Super League season.
