Lane closure at Kingsway tunnel

Merseytravel has announced a lane closure at the Kingsway Wallasey tunnel will be in place for a period of two weeks.

Due to water main renewal works on approach to the tunnel, the transport authority said it will be necessary to limit traffic to one lane of the exit towards Liverpool, from Wirral, between 21 August and 2 September. The lane closure will come into effect at 7.30pm on Sunday.

The lane will be closed from the exit of the tunnel to Byrom Street and Scotland Road. All lanes will be operational through the tunnel itself.

Merseytravel is advising motorists to allow extra time for their journey or use Queensway Birkenhead Tunnel, which will remain open throughout.

Neil Scales, chief executive of Merseytravel, said: "The work is necessary to replace the water main that feeds the fire hydrants throughout the tunnel, ensuring that Kingsway remains one of the safest road tunnels in the world."
