Real estate investor Hines has been granted planning permission for the development of 630 student bedrooms, across eight buildings in Lancaster city centre.
The plot at Bulk Road and Back Caton Road has been derelict for 20 years, but was formerly the location of the K-Shoes factory.
Under the Hines’ project, the site will see the construction of eight 11-storey blocks, made up of 125 studios, 50 cluster flats, 19 shared townhouses, and communal facilities such as a study library, gym, parking, and public realm. There will be a series of linked courtyards between the buildings.
The architect is Stride Treglown.
The project was approved by Lancaster City council at its planning committee on Monday 9 January. A report ahead of the meeting acknowledged that the development was “significant in terms of scale”, and said that “the applicant has a desire for the accommodation to be provided by September 2018, with a start of site in the spring 2017”.
