Kendal votes to bring in BID

Businesses in Kendal have voted two to one to create a Business Improvement District that will raise £1m from a levy on rates over the next five years to pay for town centre improvements.

The BID proposal, under the slogan 'Kendal's better together', received 72% approval by number of businesses and 68% by rateable value.

There were 696 eligible businesses and organisations in the BID area that could have voted. In the end, just 301 voted; 217 yes.

The Kendal town centre BID plan is focused on four priorities:

  • Marketing and promotion campaign
  • Improve appearance of town
  • Make it easier and more affordable for visitors to access the town centre
  • Use vacant premises to promote enterprise; developing group buying schemes and networks to improve business viability

The BID proposal was supported by Kendal Town Council, Cumbria County Council and South Lakeland District Council.
