Kendal sportscar showroom to become retirement home

The former Porsche garage on Shap Road will be redeveloped into 55 apartments for over 60s under plans from McCarthy & Stone.

South Lakeland Council approved the retirement specialists’ application to demolish the car showroom and construct the project on a one-acre plot next to Kendal Cricket Club.

The showroom is relocating to a new site in Carnforth after six decades in Kendal.

McCarthy & Stone’s scheme comprises a four-storey building with 33 one-bedroom apartments and an additional 22 with two bedrooms.

Communal facilities within the retirement home include a lounge, reading rooms, an internal courtyard, and mobility scooter charging room.

A total of 37 car parking spaces are proposed, to be located between the development and the cricket club.

The Planning Bureau advised McCarthy & Stone on the project.

McCarthy & Stone was established in 1963 and has delivered just shy of 60,000 properties for older people across 1,300 developments in the UK.

Data from the Office for National Statistics demonstrates an increasing need for retirement living.

The number of people in the UK aged over 85 is expected to reach 3.2million by 2033, more than double the number recorded in 2008.

In Kendal specifically, 14% of the population are over the age of 75, according to a report by consultancy Three Dragons. This figure is above the national average for this demographic, which stands at 8%.
