Join AEW and Steve Burne this Sunday for family charity walk

Hundreds of people are expected to meet at AEW Architects’ offices in Manchester on Sunday for the start of a superhero-themed walk to help former managing director Steve Burne towards a fundraising target of £250,000 for charity Ronald McDonald House.

AEW Architects is inviting all friends and colleagues from the industry to join them on the fancy dress walk on Sunday 18 February.

Ronald McDonald House provides free accommodation for families with children in hospital, and has a 60-bedroom facility to support those undergoing treatment at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and St Mary’s Neonatal unit.

Steve Burne was diagnosed with cancer in May 2017 and during his subsequent period of leave, it was confirmed as terminal in October. His experience as chair of the Manchester House board of governors, and a direct understanding of the pressures and stress of illness has resulted in him resolving to raise £250,000 to convert three spaces into more family rooms and to do it in his lifetime.

A 2.5-mile walk will take place from AEW’s office on Spring Gardens to Ronald McDonald House on Hathersage Road, attended by Burne, his family, and various AEW staff.

Meeting at 1.15pm, there will be family entertainment outside the office including a band, and helium balloons, branded flags and a children’s activity trail map will be provided.

The walk will start at 2pm, and will go through Market Street, across Cross Street, through Albert Square, around Central Library and straight down Oxford Rd to Ronald McDonald House Manchester.

At the finish there will be a fire engine and mascot, 15 superheroes and princesses on arrival, including a 40ft Stay Puft marshmallow man from Ghostbusters, weather permitting.

The event is also set to feature Jenny Powell of Wheel of Fortune and Through the Keyhole fame, a magic show, and kids activities including face painting, balloon modeller, henna painter, and glitter artist.

The walk has already raised £10,000 and in total Burne has raised over £125,000 towards the #SteveBurneRooms.
