JD’s Kingsway operation reaches 1.45m sq ft

JD Sports Fashion has added four mezzanine floors to its Kingsway Rochdale depot taking the retailer's warehousing capacity up by more than 600,000 sq ft to 1.45m sq ft.

Increased demand at the business, which saw revenue increase by 25% in the 12 months to February 2015 to £1.5bn, means JD is not ruling out the possibility of expanding its Kingsway warehouse space further.

Training manager Jamie McIntyre said: "We currently employ over 1,000 colleagues on JD contracts at Kingsway, boosted by agency staff depending on season and demand. We anticipate that our recent expansion on Kingsway Business Park, combined with increasing demand for our products, will lead to the creation of a significant number of new career opportunities."

JD signed a pre-sale agreement with developer Wilson Bowden to build the shed in 2010 and relocated from Heywood to the new base in 2011.

"We are delighted that through this significant expansion programme, JD Sports Fashion has once again shown its commitment to Rochdale and to the local workforce," commented Carol Hopkins, of Rochdale Development Agency. "Located alongside the M62, Kingsway Business Park provides an enviable base for organisations that require easy access to the UK motorway network – organisations such as JD Sports."
