Ion appoints architect for next Rhyl project
Developer Ion has selected shedkm as main architect on its Queens Market project in Rhyl’s West Parade.
The site covers around 97,000 sq ft and is being promoted as an opportunity for a market development combining retail, arts and crafts, along with food and drink, residential and a civic hub.
Ion has said that “our vision is to create a new and contemporary market complementing the ongoing regeneration of Rhyl Waterfront”.
Ion is also working with Denbighshire County Council as part of a wider scheme to transform Rhyl’s town centre. The Welsh Government confirmed in late 2018 that it is to contribute £2.5m to the local authority to acquire and develop the site, which formerly housed a market and the Savoy Hotel. Some demolition is required on site.
Developments completed so far include a Travelodge, which Ion and its contractor Wynne Construction handed over last month. The 30,000 sq ft hotel was delivered on the East Parade car park site.
The £25m investment programme on Rhy’s seafront also includes the Pavilion Theatre, which underwent a £2.4m upgrade ,again delivered by Ion and Wynne, in early 2018. On behalf of the council and Alliance Leisure, ISG is delivering SC2, a successor to the Rhyl Sun Centre.
That’s really good good news, the Town has never looked so bad, boarded up shop windows, empty shops all over the place. People want to come to Rhyl see the sea, looking at all the new thing’s that’s been going on which are looking good . However you walk around the shops and it lets the place down, it’s still nice to walk around the shops and have e a drink and see people you haven’t seen in a long time.Not everyone wants to have Internet Shopping they like to see what they’re buying.

Good for you Charlie and I am very happy for you. But Rhyl is not Prestatyn it has really been on a downward slide for many years, I spent a lot of my childhood in Towyn and Rhyl was really good in those halcyon days of the late 50’s and early 60’s. Good to see some progress here and hopefully more.

It would be nice to see some of the money used for housing for the homeless and people of Rhyl it’s ok to have nice looking waterfronts but bad news for homeless who have to sleep out in winter .And stop eviction of homeless from hotels …

A suggestion for regeneration of Rhyl. Possibly some small caravan parks, It would encourage families to holiday in Rhyl and make Rhyl more family friendly. And the residents of Rhyl should not be forgotten, we are fed up with no shops and having to put up with the homeless begging. Despite what some say Rhylites are descent people who deserves to live in a decent town.
