IMAGES | Designs revealed for £50m UCLan gateway
The University of Central Lancashire has released images of the seven shortlisted designs for a civic square and student support centre in Preston, and has called for public feedback before final judging takes place later this month.
The scheme forms part of UCLan’s £200m 10-year campus masterplan.
Following a competition held by the Royal Institute of British Architects held earlier this year, the shortlisted practices are:

- Austin-Smith:Lord
- Feilden Clegg Bradley
- Hawkins\Brown
- Nicholas Hare Architects
- Sheppard Robson
- Stanton Williams
The designs will be on display at St George’s Shopping Centre on 8-10 August, and UCLan’s Foster Building on Fylde Road on 11-12 August.
The designs can also be viewed online at www.ribacompetitions.com/uclan where members of the public can share their views using the online form. The link will be available from 9am on 8 August. Which studio is being which design is kept anonymous until the winner is selected.
Professor Mike Thomas, UCLan vice-chancellor, said: “A core principle of our masterplan is to integrate seamlessly with the rest of the city for the benefit of all, and a series of workshops have already taken place with varying user groups to help shape our plans.
“The standard of the shortlisted entries is very high and we’re now looking to members of the public to ensure these designs reflect what’s important to them.”
Combined, the new student support centre and civic square will be the same size as London’s Trafalgar Square.
The campus redevelopment was masterplanned by Allies & Morrison. BDP is providing engineering expertise.
